The latest operating system marketshare data from StatCounter reveals Windows 10 is now the most-used operating system. For the first time ever, Windows 10 surpasses Windows 7 in terms of global market share. The data from StatCounter reveals 42.78 percent of users were on Windows 10 in January 2018 versus 41.86 percent for Windows 7. Windows 8.1 takes a distant third place with a marketshare of 8.72 percent.
Windows 10 launched on July 29, 2015, and managed to quickly capture a sizable share of the market thanks to Microsoft’s free upgrade offer. That said, Redmond was a bit too ambitious with its goal of hitting one billion Windows 10 installations just three years after launch, scrapping those plans in 2016.
Of course, there are various stats firms and they all use a different methodology. The operating system marketshare report from NetMarketShare for example looks completely different, with 42.39 percent marketshare for Windows 7 and just 34.29 percent for Windows 10. So not a total victory for Windows 10 just yet.
