First Chinese company starts shipping DDR4 ICs and modules

Xi’an UniIC Semiconductors announces the availability of 4Gb DDR4 memory chips and 4GB and 8GB modules. This marks a milestone as Xi’an UniIC is the first Chinese company to bring in-house DDR4 chips to the market.

The specifications of the first batch aren't impressive though. Initially, the company will ship 4GB and 8GB SODIMMs, 4GB and 8GB UDIMMS, and 4GB UDIMMs with ECC. All variants are rated for just 2133MHz with CL15-15-15 timings at 1.2V.

As AnandTech reports, these DDR4 chips are likely aimed at the massive volume of inexpensive PCs, many of which are sold in the company's home market.
Xi’an UniIC’s DDR4 products can hardly impress avid readers who follow DRAM innovations closely (and know that leading makers already produce DDR4-3600 ICs), but the fact that a Chinese company has developed and produced such chips is important itself. Meanwhile, Xi’an UniIC actually has history of DRAM production, so the new memory was hardly developed entirely from scratch.
