Myst series to get 25th anniversary update

Myst developer Cyan Worlds announced a big treat for its millions-strong fanbase. While the name may not ring a bell for younger gamers, the Myst series was one of the most widely sold video games in the 1990s. The original from 1993 saw sales of 6 million copies, a record that didn't get beaten until the launch of The Sims in 2002.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of this adventure game, Cyan Worlds will launch updated versions of all Myst games later this year. These will be compatible with Windows 10 and there will be a physical collector's edition with a special, unspecified artifact.
In the fall of 1993 Cyan released Myst, the surrealist, graphic adventure video game that became the world of millions of explorers. It surpassed even our wildest expectations. Not only did it become the best selling PC game of the 20th century, but it also had an impact on our culture. Over the years, Myst has been referenced in television shows, movies, books, comics, and more. It has been credited by other creators as an inspiration as they built their own amazing worlds. It’s even made it’s way into the Smithsonian Institute and other notable museums.

With 2018 marking the 25th anniversary of Myst, Cyan would like to celebrate this journey.

Over the last few years we’ve been working to procure the rights to make all of the Myst games available. As an indie developer, resources are limited for development, and acquiring rights isn’t always an option. But we managed to finally talk to all the right people and departments and put some funding together to try to make it happen. With agreements in place, we’re happy to announce that we’ll be releasing updated (for Windows 10) versions of all the Myst games later this year!

And for those of you who are interested, we wanted to create a physical collection in a unique package with a cool artifact — a limited, collectors edition, only available for the 25th anniversary. Stay tuned.

There will probably be more adventures in the Myst universe, but we’re reserving 2018 for remembering our journey, and making something special to commemorate the last 25 years.

Thanks so much for your support!

The ending has not yet been written…
