The Internet just got its first look at Intel's 10nm Cannon Lake as analysts from TechInsights bought a Lenovo IdeaPad 330 laptop to size up the system's Core i3-8121U processor. Intel caught everyone a little by surprise by announcing this chip, although it's less exciting than it looks as this is a pretty low-end part with just two cores and disabled graphics.

German tech site ComputerBase analyzed the photos and concludes it has a die size of about 71mm². This gives the chip only a minor advantage versus the 14nm Broadwell-U, which was introduced in the summer of 2014, with a die size of 82mm².

High-volume production of Intel's 10nm chips isn't expected until 2019, and it's more likely to be the second half of the year than the former. Intel is really struggling with 10nm, this caused the company to stay on 14nm for a lot longer than expected, shook up the firm's roadmap and enabled AMD to catch up with its Zen design.
