These days there's not a lot to report about hard disk drives. Some new technology every once in a while, and higher capacities. But it's not like HDDs will ever excite us again, as SSDs are simply much much faster. Anyway, Toshiba has a new HDD with world's first 16TB storage capacity. The MG08-line is intended for enterprises and uses two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) in combination with helium-filing.
Using an industry-leading [1] 9-disk design pioneered by Toshiba, the MG08 Series provides 16TB [2] of conventional magnetic recordi ng (CMR) capacity and 7,200 rp m performance. The industry-standard 3.5-inch [3] form-factor integr ates easily into cloud-scale storage infrastructure, business-critical servers a nd storage, and File and Object storage solutions. Toshiba’s precision industrial laser welding technology is put to use to seal h elium inside the 9-di sk mechanics. The m assive 16TB capacity is delivered using proven CMR re cording technology providing op timum application compatibility and dat a reliability. A vailable with either a SA TA 6.0 Gbit/s or a 12.0 Gbit/s SAS interface [4] , the MG08 Series models integr ate easily into standard 3.5- inch drive bays to help reduce the foot print and operational bu rden of cloud-scale storage infrastructure, and busine ss critical servers and stora ge systems.
