It's not really a big surprise, but AMD came out with a presentation that heavily criticizes NVIDIA's DLSS technology. AMD representatives dismissed the effectiveness of the proprietary post-processing effect, claiming DLSS comes with "image artifacts caused by upscaling and harsh sharpening." Instead of working on a DLSS rival, AMD praised open standards like SMAA and TAA.
“In the end,” says AMD’s director of marketing, Sasa Marinkovic, “we are looking at the methods that are going to be widely implemented in today’s games, and that run exceptionally well on Radeon VII. So our priority is going to be looking at SMAA and TAA and not proprietary technologies.”
At CES 2019, AMD hinted at a DLSS-like technology of its own, but it seems that is off the table.
