When Microsoft launched Windows 10 in 2015, the company forecast the operating system would run on 1 billion devices within three years. That prediction didn't come to pass due to the total collapse of the Windows Phone platform, as well as slower adoption than expected.

However, there's a good chance Microsoft will hit the 1 billion mark in 2020. The software giant just announced that Windows 10 is now running on over 900 million devices.

At the moment, one of the issues Microsoft is facing is that a lot of Windows users are still running Windows 7. It's a bit of a repeat of the Windows XP situation, many users are unwilling to upgrade despite the fact that Microsoft is cutting off security updates on January 14, 2020.

According to the latest OS marketshare statistics from NetMarketShare, over 30 percent of computers are still running Windows 7.
