The PCI SIG released version 0.3 of the PCI Express 6.0 specification and said that the final specification is expected to be ready in 2021. The new technology will once again double the maximum bandwidth, to 64GT/s. This results in about 128GB/s (in each direction) for a x16 slot. PCI Express 6.0 will use some new high-end encoding technologies like PAM4 but other than this there are still a lot of technical challenges that need to be solved.
The announcement itself is light on technical details, as the design goals and major underlying technologies for PCIe 6.0 were announced at the very start of the project. However the organization is keen to ensure that PCIe development continues moving at a steady pace, to avoid repeating the long gap between 3.0 and 4.0.
