DigiTimes reports China is on track to become a DRAM powerhouse over the next 5 to 10 years. At the moment, three players (Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron) control over 90 percent of the DRAM market but China has the ambition to become a dominant force in the DRAM and NAND markets. At least at first, the country's goal is not to ship DRAM to the world, but to become self-sufficient and lower its imports. China is one of the largest DRAM consumers in the world so its actions will have a major impact on the market.
China DRAM rise looming, may reshape global market in 5-10 years: The global DRAM market, now over 90% controlled by three major players Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron, is likely to experience a structural shakeup in the next 5-10 years, with a new DRAM business unit set up by China's government-backed Tsinghua Unigroup expected to pose the largest potential threat to the top-3.
