The latest sales figures of the PlayStation 4 reveal that Sony's current-gen console is now the second-best selling console in history. With sales of 102.8 million units, the console has finally surpassed the 102.5 million units that were sold of the original PlayStation. However, the PS4 is unlikely to catch up with the PS2. That's still world's most-sold console, with total sales of 155 million units. With the PS5 shipping late next year, the PS4 is nearing the end of its lifecycle.

Sony sold 2.8 million PS4 consoles in Q3 2019, which is 1.1 million units less than the same period in 2018. The PS4 was launched in November 2013.
The drop in numbers make it pretty clear that the PlayStation 4 is arriving to the end of its life. Not only are unit sales down, but gaming revenue and profit dropped as a whole by 17 percent and 35 percent, respectively, over 2018. Sony expects 2019 PS4 sales to be less than it originally forecast by 1.5 million units.
