Citing a Chinese-language report from IT Home, GizChina reports that TSMC's 3nm process is facing delays. As is becoming a common theme in a lot of our post these days, the novel coronavirus is to blame. Due to issues with logistics and the equipment supply chain, TSMC will not be able to stick to its original timetable. Mass production of 3nm chips is still expected in 2022:
In other reports, due to the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world, TSMC has postponed its 3nm (nanometer) trial production. The company had to postpone the trial production after the pandemic affected its logistics and equipment supply chain. The company says that the June installation schedule will be extended to October. Furthermore, its Nanke 18 plant trial production line may be delayed by at least one quarter. In the supply chain assessment, TSMC originally planned to trial-produce the 3nm process at the end of this year. However, with the new development, it will also postpone it until early next year. Nevertheless, there are reports that TSMC would still mass-produce the 3nm process in 2022. The company has about two years to plan for the mass production.
TSMC's 5nm rollout is still believed to be on track, with mass production expected to commence soon.
