Yesterday, at the company's shareholder's meeting, Taiwanese foundry TSMC revealed it's developing 4nm (4N) process technology. DigiTimes reports this new N4 node will be an enhanced version of N5P.

TSMC expects to start test production in Q3 2020, with N4 volume production to start in 2023. The N4 node will be positioned between the company's 3nm and 5nm offerings. Customers opting for N4 will get better performance than 5nm and will pay less than for the better 3nm node.

The N5P process from TSMC has 20 percent higher performance than its N7 node, or reduces power consumption by 40 percent at the same performance level. No specifics were shared about N4 but it should be better than N5P.

TSMC is already installing 3nm equipment, mass production of 3nm chip is expected in 2022.
