Zhaoxin is a Chinese chip company that x86 processors thanks to a partnership with VIA Technology. Obviously, the firm is far behind Intel and AMD but the goal here for China is to become less reliant on foreign chips.
A new Zhaoxin roadmap is circulating on the Internet and one of the interesting things here is a tiny label that reveals the company is working on a GPU. The first discrete GPU developed by the Chinese company will focus on a 70W TDP and will be fabbed by TSMC on a 28nm process.
Specifications are unknown but it's believed the GPU will be based on VIA's S3 Graphics IP. The GPU should be ready between 2020 and 2021. Whether we will see these chips in the West in the near future is unknown but it's unlikely due to a variety of reasons. Besides Chinese government contracts, there are 1.4 billion people in China so that's a pretty large target market to focus on for these firms.
