Uniko’s Hardware claims Intel has picked September 2021 as the launch date for its 12th Gen Core "Alder Lake-S" desktop processors and the 600-series chipsets. Alder Lake-S is the first 10nm desktop processor from Intel, it uses what the company calls "10nm SuperFin". The architecture combines high-performance Golden Cove cores with energy-efficient Gracemont cores. This is something we've only seen in the mobile market, it will be interesting to see what the result is for the desktop market.

Only the Golden Cove cores have multi-threading so this results in an unusual thread count of maximum 24 for the 16 (8+8) core model. Alder Lake-S also packs Gen12.2 Xe-based integrated graphics and it's expected to support DDR5.

Due to all these changes, a new socket will be required. Alder Lake-S will use LGA1700 and will require a new 600-series motherboard.
