Not only is TSMC the world leader in the semiconductor foundry, but the market is seeing a big shortage of capacity. This gives TSMC a lot of pricing power as a lot of the foundry's clients do not have a good alternative if they want a steady supply of chips.

DigiTimes heard from Taiwanese IC design companies that they've been informed about a price hike that will go in effect starting 2022.

Allegedly, TSMC will increase prices by 15 to 20 percent for some of its mature nodes like 16nm, and by about 10 percent for the 12nm and more advanced nodes.

Earlier this month, there was a rumor that UMC, a smaller rival of TSMC, was also planning a 10 percent price hike.
