OpenDocument: Limitation to Innovation or Medication to Separation?

Gamershell claims to have a tremendously insightful article on the OpenDocument format, it covers the standard, the opposition, the battleground and who's really behind it.

However, there's one company whose involvement in the OpenDocument format is very interesting - Sun. [...] Has OpenDocument influenced Star/OpenOffice development, or perhaps Star/OpenOffice development has influenced OpenDocument's development? If the latter is true, doesn't it imply that Sun has extra control over OpenDocument's future?
