Logitech V220 Cordless Notebook Mouse review

Lots of things can be seen on the back. There are four mouse feet to improve sliding, the 1000dpi optical sensor, an on/off button so no power will be wasted during transport or inactivity, the area where you can snap the USB receiver on, a reset button to reset the wireless connection to your notebook and a button to remove the front cap so you can insert the AA battery.

The USB receiver snaps on easily but sticks out a bit.

And here's a look at how you install the battery:

The front can be removed by pressing the button on the back of the mouse.

I've been using this mouse for a bit more than a week now and my experience with the V220 has been really positive.

Testing and Conclusions

Size and ergonomics: The V220 is pretty small and should fit in your notebook bag without a problem. I have fairly big hands and found the V220 quite comfortable to use. It's not as convenient as a large desktop mouse but it's better than some other notebook mice I've used in the past.

Battery life: One of the important things about a notebook mouse is the battery life. Logitech claims this mouse will last up to 6 months on a single AA battery but I bet you'll probably get a lot less if you use this mouse for a couple of hours a day. As I've only been using this mouse for roughly a week I'm not sure how long the battery lasts. To give you a better indication: I've been using it 2 hours a day for about 7-8 days and the Logitech software still says the battery is fine. I expect that the batteries will probably last for at least 3-4 weeks and that's a lot better than the battery life of some notebook mice I've used in the past which required me to switch batteries every 4-5 days.

Battery life UPDATE (September 15, 2007): Seems like I underestimated the battery life of this mouse. I've been using it for about two months now for a couple of hours a day and it's still working.

Battery Life UPDATE 2 (October 18, 2007):
Just received a warning that the battery level is low. With a couple of hours of use a day, the mouse lasts over 3 months on a single battery.

Tracking: The 1000 DPI sensor of the V220 does a fine job, I tested it on various surfaces and was very pleased with the results. Some of the surfaces I tested: four different plastic mousepads, a magazine, leather, a cloth, my bed, and wood. In each case the tracking was excellent.

Wireless performance: The V220 performs really well, I've been using it for a week and didn't notice any connection drops. The reception also goes pretty far, I did a quick test and the receiver was still able to pick up the signal of the mouse at a distance of about 3 meters.

Buttons: The V220 doesn't have a lot of buttons, this mouse would be a bit better for me if it had two extra buttons on the left side. The other buttons on the mouse are fine, they click away pretty good and the scroll wheel is fine too. The wheel isn't too stiff like on some other mouses and even tilting goes pretty smooth. The scroll wheel can be used as a third button and with the SetPoint software you can also assign another feature to the tilting like volume adjusting or zooming.

Software: A bit weird perhaps is Logitech's decision not to include a CD-ROM with the software. You don't need this software to use your mouse but I do recommend it because otherwise, you won't be able to use the special features of this mouse. The SetPoint software can be downloaded on Logitech's website and is compatible with Windows and Mac. It's the same software as Logitech uses for its other mice and I didn't have any problems with it. The SetPoint software allows you to assign other features to each button of your mouse, adjust the mouse acceleration, check battery life and some other settings.

Price: The price of the V220 is alright. The official MSRP is 29.99EUR ($29.99 in the U.S.) but you may be able to find this mouse for a lot less. Some stores in the Netherlands for instance are selling it for under 22EUR. At this price, this mouse is a really good deal.

The Good Stuff
- Affordable
- Ergonomic
- Good tracking
- Long battery life

The Bad Stuff
- No extra buttons

If you're looking for an affordable notebook mouse the Logitech V220 is a very good choice. I give the Logitech V220 a 8.5/10 and our Seal of Approval.
