U3 USB standard - run applications directly from USB memory cards

A new USB standard - dubed U3 - has been announced. It will allow users to carry, store and launch applications directly from a USB flash drive without the need to install the program.

One of the first adopters of this standard will be ICQ. The company's instant messing will come embedded on devices from participating vendors.

Other companies that will endorse the standard are Corel, McAfee and Zone Labs.

Iomega can already do this with their Active Disk technology on their own USB drives. Don't know how that fits into a standards-based product, but at least it's available. Are there similar products already available?
