New Universe Technology Inc., Taiwan, was kind enough to send us their latest external DVD-writer the NU HDW-164. This drive supports 16x DVD+R/-R writing, 4x DVD+RW/-RW and 4x DVD+R9 DL writing technology - allowing dual layer discs of 8.5Gb to be written.

We purchased this product the day before Christmas, and we haven't been able to use it. We're confused as to what file formats are supported by the bundled Nero Xpress software.

We usually edit photo AVPs on Avid Xpress, and then export the file as Quicktime on Avid Meridien codec. This method works when we burn DVDs using Toast Titanium on our office Apple G5.

But when we tried the same method on the HDW-164 using the supplied Nero Express software, the application wouldn't acknowledge the video directory. It was able to burn DVDs when we exported the AVP as .avi or mpeg4 file, but the resulting output was worse than a VCD. We suspect that the problem lies with the Nero software itself. One of our colleagues said that we still needed to purchase the NeroVision software to be able to burn DVDs from Avid Xpress. Such unnecessary expense! Why didn't they just bundle the NeroVision software with the HDW-164? I'm thinking of returning this product and replacing it with another brand that has more reliable software.
