Intel Core Ultra 9 285K Processor Review
Posted on 2024-10-24 18:38:47 by Thomas De Maesschalck"It has been quite a while since we've reviewed an Intel processor, we have to go all the way back to the Intel Core i9-11900K in 2021! Quite a lot has changed since then and today Intel is unleashing their latest Arrow Lake desktop processors. With this generation we are getting new naming as well as a new socket. Intel has dropped the “i” from the CPU naming and premium CPUs will have the “Ultra” branding. So for this specific processor instead of it being called the Core i9-15900K, it is called the Core Ultra 9 285K. Confusing, yes, but after a few generations I think we'll get used to it. The new socket is the Intel LGA 1851 which you are going to find on all new Intel Z890-based motherboards. By adding new pins this socket currently will only support this generation of processors, but it has the same dimensions and the same center-to-center distance for the mounting holes as LGA 1700, so LGA 1700-compatible CPU coolers will work on this socket. The Intel Core Ultra 9 285K will sit as the current flagship processor in the Arrow Lake-S line and is a 24-core processor that makes use of 8 performance cores and 16 efficiency cores as well as 36 MB of L3 cache and a TDP of 125W. The chip has a base clock of 3.7 GHz and will boost up to 5.7 GHz depending on the workload. Since we haven't taken a look at an Intel CPU in a while we are going to frame this review a bit differently. I currently have a Core i9-12900K and AMD Ryzen 9 7900X. So in this review we will see if it is really worth upgrading to the Intel Core Ultra 285K from either of these processors."
