ExtremeTech also takes a look at the Athlon 64 FX-55:

Consider this for a moment: AMD's new flagship single-core processor will cost OEMs $1,031 in lots of 1,000 units. That price is actually a bit more than the $1,001 for the Athlon 64 X2 4800+—the top dual-core Athlon 64. Of course, the core clock rate of the FX-57 is 400MHz higher (2.8GHz versus 2.4GHz for the 4800+). Meanwhile, the company is keeping the FX-55 around, at $827—such a deal. We'll discuss the implications of AMD's pricing model in our conclusion, but it's a measure of AMD's confidence that the company feels it can keep the prices high.
