If you are a smart IT manager, you know the benefits of using a shared Network Attached Storage Device (NAS) in lieu of using several large hard drives in numerous computers just to hold the same material. For the home user this device can be used to stream movies or MP3s to their HTPC system without the need of tying up the hard drive in HTPC unit itself. The unit we are looking are today is the Coolmax CN-550, which can be configured with either a 10/100 mps port or a single USB 2.0 port. So come on along as we check this unit out.

It is a very interesting unit. Nevertheless, it would be a great idea if Coolmax added telnet configuration. I am sure that it would not be that difficult (is its firmware a Linux compilation) and it could perfectly replace a complete server when speaking of domestic networks with a Web server and an SMTP/POP/IMAP.

Wouldn't it make sense to replace a 1000$ domestic server with an enclose worth 70$ + a hard drive as big as you need? Furthermore no noise (fan automatically turns down when not needed) and low consumption (even HD turns down when not idled for a long time)

With no telnet support it is difficult to add features
