Some 20 years ago there was no real alternative to silver in the photoprocess. It provoked gloomy estimates that soon all silver resources would be on the exposed paper and photographic films, and there would be no silver for new snapshots. When colour photography started to blossom and centralised photolabs gained popularity, the problem ceased to be so acute.
