Last week ATI dropped somewhat of a bombshell on the graphics’ industry by being the first GPU maker to up the Pixel Pipeline ante to 48 – double that of its only competitor, NVIDIA. In somewhat of a surprise move, ATI was forced to quickly churn out its next-gen part quite a bit sooner than most folks in the industry expected; the X1800’s lackluster debut does play a direct role in ATI’s decision to move forward faster. In fact, ATI’s PR has told us that as of last week, all production has stopped on its X1800-series GPUs and the primary focus now is on the X1900 / X1600 line-up for the foreseeable future.
