With Intel's Xeon line aging, the newer Opteron processors have begun to steadily increase their market share for workstation/server users, finally cracking into one of Intel's long-standing un-touched markets. While this market certainly isn't large compared to desktops, it is highly profitable, and AMD's continuing success has no doubt caused Intel a bit of distress. Intel has seemingly gone into damage control mode in order to help re-gain this lost market share, and they're willing to do whatever it takes in order to get it back, even if it means sacrificing some of their profit margin on their high-end "cash-cow" Xeon processors..
