HP's first personal document scanner, the HP Scanjet N6010 ($499 direct) manages to impress me with what it does well—while simultaneously leaving me to wonder, What were they thinking? Indeed, there are a few odd oversights. Fortunately, the things it does well, on both the hardware and software sides, include the core task of scanning and managing documents, as well as doubling as a general-purpose office scanner for things like copying, faxing, and e-mail.
