In the fourth quarter of 2006, NVIDIA released the GeForce 8800 GTX with the usual fanfare. That wasn't the only NVIDIA release that day, though; something less glamorous and more mainstream was also unleashed. This part, the nForce 680i SLI, was a new core logic for Intel's LGA775 processors. Although it was designed to take on Intel's i975X chipset, it's an expensive bit of kit. On launch the 680i SLI boards cost almost £200, and even now retail examples cost upwards of £150.
