Following the successful cult following that continued even when the original Star Trek series was cancelled in 1969, another series to be called Star Trek: Phase II was commissioned in the late 1970’s. However, after the massive success that Star Wars saw in 1977, plans quickly evolved to turn the series into a feature length movie, to become known rather simply as Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Many fans deride the slow pace of the film (it has been harshly dubbed The Motionless Picture, but I appreciate the slightly slower pace and over time it has become appreciated as somewhat of a ‘thinking mans’ sci-fi film, in the ilk of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
