Intel's New E0 Prescott Stepping: Improved at Idle, but Throttling Under Load. Review

This combination of high heat, high power requirements, and lower performance compared to Northwood has dogged Prescott ever since launch, and weakened the CPU’s appeal to a significant portion of the retail market; a situation not helped by the market’s mid-stream position as we transition from older industry standards to newer ones. The slower-than-expected speed ramp has left Northwood’s performance shadow hanging over the 90nm CPU much longer than Intel would’ve liked, but at 3.8 GHz, Prescott finally should begin to leave Northwood behind. Even more importantly, the E0 stepping appears to finally offer a genuinely-cooler CPU. Does that appearance hold up under testing?
