Radeons codenamed “Cayman” have been followed by various misinformation since the day they were first heard of. Among these, the most prominent were the number of stream processors, memory quantity and the release date. Some of the information was true, though, such as the fact that they were to appear in the fourth quarter of this year. The initially announced release date was 22nd November, but AMD turned out to have been too optimistic in the meantime. Launch plans have obviously been changed several times, finally settling down to 15th December. More dates were brought up during those three weeks, but only the last one was made official by AMD. Of course, creating a media buzz is the first thing that people will do in situations like this, so several theories as to why the release date was pushed back were created, ranging from inadequate performance, over a lack of components for assembly and a raw final product, to a low yield. In order to keep the media stable, AMD announced their official stance on Cayman's postponement – allegedly, HD 5970 and its newly formed lower price was selling and beating competitors so well that any sort of rush would be completely unnecessary...
