Solid State Drive Performance Comparison Guide Rev. 3.0 Review

Posted on 2011-05-10 20:56:34 by Thomas De Maesschalck

The solid state drive (SSD) is a new and relatively niche storage medium, but one that is slowly but steadily eating away at the universality of the hard disk drive. After all, solid state drives offer some big advantages over hard disk drives - extremely fast random accesses, absolutely silent operation, ability to withstand tremendous amounts of shock, vibration and atmospheric pressure (or the lack thereof).

This comparison guide will compare the performance of all the solid state drives we can get our hands on. This would be similar to our Hard Disk Drive Performance Comparison Guide. It may start off small, but we intend to keep adding new solid state drives and even new benchmarks as we go along.

Here are the latest updates :
- Major revamp of the article, with numerous updates and corrections.
- Added the Intel X25-M G2 (34 nm) 120 GB solid state drive.
- Added the OCZ Enyo 64 GB portable solid state drive.
- Removed the Intel X25-M (50 nm) 80 GB solid state drive.
- Upgraded to the newer IO Meter 2008 benchmark with tests aligned at 4 KB.
- Retested the SSDs with the latest firmware.
- The SSDs were also retested with compressible and non-compressible data, and the results averaged for a more accurate representation of real life performance.
