Intel released LGA Socket 1366 for the high-end performance segment in November 2008. The platform has held its own over the years, fending off competition from AMD and even Intel's own mainstream offerings thanks largely in part to a triple channel memory controller. Father time eventually catches up to everyone and in November 2011, Intel released the successor to LGA 1366 known as LGA 2011 - 2011 being the number of pins protruding on the underside of the CPU. As such, the processor giant is set to discontinue boxed LGA 1366 parts on June 29, 2012.
