All those virtual reality headset price cuts this year have helped to spur demand as sales have surpassed the 1 million mark for the first time in Q3 2017. Canalys research analyst Vincent Thielke says consumers are definitely very sensitive to the pricing of VR headsets.

During the quarter that ended September 30, Sony sold 490,000 PlayStation VR headsets, Facebook sold 210,000 Oculus Rift headsets, and HTC supplied 160,000 Vive VR headsets. These are the three largest companies in the VR headset business, they accounted for 86 percent of the market in Q3 2017.
“Sony is well-placed to take advantage of this increasing interest in VR,” said Canalys analyst Jason Low in a statement. “Sony has dominated the Japanese VR headset market since the release of the PS VR, taking more than an 80 percent share, and will continue to lead as it increases supply of the PS VR headset with bundles featuring new titles from popular franchises, including Doom, Skyrim, and Gran Turismo.”
Thielke expects VR headsets will soar to new heights in 2018 as PC vendors are rolling out their new Mixed Reality headsets.
