Raspberry Pi 4 offers 3x more performance

Developments boards like Arduino or Raspberry Pi enable you to quickly build prototypes or fully functioning projects. I recently made an Arduino-based line follower and these products are can offer a lot of fun (as well as frustration) as they allow you to build robots that perform tasks in the real world.

Late last month, the Raspberry Pi Foundation announced an update to its platform. With pricing starting at the same $35 for the 1GB LPDDR4 RAM model, you now get a board with much better performance as well as new capabilities. For starters, the 1.5GHz quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 CPU offers almost three times more performance. Other highlights include the addition of Gigabit Ethernet support, two USB 3.0 ports, dual-monitor support, 4Kp60 hardware decoding support, and USB Type-C for the power connector.

The new board is backwards-compatible and if you need more RAM you can get a 2GB or 4GB variant for $45 and $55, respectively.

Features:
  • A 1.5GHz quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 CPU (~3× performance)
  • 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB of LPDDR4 SDRAM
  • Full-throughput Gigabit Ethernet
  • Dual-band 802.11ac wireless networking
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports
  • Dual monitor support, at resolutions up to 4K
  • VideoCore VI graphics, supporting OpenGL ES 3.x
  • 4Kp60 hardware decode of HEVC video
  • Complete compatibility with earlier Raspberry Pi products
  • Raspberry Pi 4
