AMD today started to embrace PCI Express, by launching the AMD-8132 chip that allows OEMs and system builders to bring PCI-X 2.0 connectivity to AMD Opteron based systems.

The new AMD-8000 series chip for servers and workstations that takes advantage of the next generation of I/O technology is planned to become available later this month.
AMD has made significant enhancements to the AMD Opteron processor with these new models. Performance-enhancing features include support for SSE3 software instructions as well as an increase in the HyperTransport performance through an increase in bus frequency, to 1GHz.
Another announcement from AMD was the launch of the Opteron 852 and 252 processors. Within a month HP, Sun and IBM will be shipping servers based on these new Opteron processors.

AMD also said that it plans to launch a bunch of dual-core AMD Opteron processors in mid-2005.

The Opteron 852 is priced at $1,514 in 1,000-unit quantities and the Opteron 252 is priced at $851 in 1,000-unit quantities.
