iPod shuffle 2GB and 4GB due this summer

Mobilemag confirms the rumours that Apple will launch a 2GB iPod shuffle in June and a 4GB version by August. Currently Apple only ships 512MB and 1GB versions of the iPod shuffle, which uses NAND flash memory instead of a hard disk.

Samsung today released its 4Gbit NAND flash. These memory devices are made on a 70nm process and offer a 50 percent performance boost over their 90nm 2Gbit predecessors. Samsung says its 4Gbit NAND flash features a write speed of 16MB/s, allowing real-time storage of high-definition video images.

Toshiba released its 4Gbit NAND flash memory earlier this year and will just like Samsung start producing 8Gb NAND flash memory devices this summer.

It would make sense if Apple double the storage from 512MB and 1GB to 1GB and 2GB. But 2GB and 4GB--come on--what is Apple going to do with iPod minis with only 4GB and 6GB storage? Regards, George Lien georgelien@email.com

Hmm... A mini is about twice the size of a shuffle, how about an 8GB mini with flash memory?
