Winamp shuts down on December 20

AOL announced yesterday that it's closing Winamp on December 20, 2013. The official website will go down on that date and the associated web services will cease to function. Winamp came into existence in 1997 and was bought by AOL in June 1999 for over $80 million.

Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release. Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years.

ARS Technica spoke to to several people and heard from venture capitalist Josh Felser that AOL had been trying to sell Winamp for months but that it failed to do so.
