Microsoft quits delivery of Windows 7 to retailers

In an effort to limit people from installing older versions of Windows, and to avoid Windows 7 becoming the next XP, Microsoft has quietly discontinued retail sales of its Windows 7 operating system as of October 30th. The next deadline is the end of sales for PCs with Windows 7 preinstalled, OEMs will no longer be able to buy Windows 7 licenses starting from October 30, 2014.

Microsoft's practice, first defined in 2010, is to stop selling an older operating system in retail one year after the launch of its successor, and halt delivery of the previous Windows edition to OEMs two years after a new version launches. The company shipped Windows 8, Windows 7's replacement, in October 2012.
