DigiTimes writes Samsung is ramping up its 25nm DRAM production, posing a threat to its rivals. Competitor Micron builds the majority of its DRAM chips on a 30nm process and is unlikely to make the switch to 20nm before the end of 2014. SK Hynix on the other hand is expected to stick to the 29nm process for the foreseeable future as the company's process node transition plans were interrupted by the fire that hit the Wuxi fab in September 2013.
Micron is unlikely to complete its technology transition to a 20nm process until the end of 2014, said the observers. The firm builds the majority of its DRAM chips using 30nm process technology. Nonetheless, Micron's production plant in Hiroshima, Japan has upgraded its process technology to 25nm, the observers noted. The Hiroshima fab, formerly a 12-inch fab owned by Japan's Elpida Memory, is dedicated to producing mobile DRAM chips.
