Earlier this month, Intel signed a
licensing deal with ARM that allows third parties to contract the chip giant to manufacture ARM-based chips on its 10nm FinFET process. Now
Nikkei Asian Review reports that Intel is attempting to capture chip orders for Apple's SoCs, a move that would turn up the heat on TSMC. The first Intel-made chips for Apple's iPhones and iPads could ship as early as 2018:
"TSMC could face tough competition as soon as 2018 or 2019 as Intel is likely to gain orders from Apple by then," Samuel Wang, a veteran semiconductor analyst at research company Gartner, told the Nikkei Asian Review. "Intel has begun to engage with Apple and it aims to grab one or two top-tier customers from TSMC."
