ZOWIE G-TF Rough mousepad review

Mousepads come not only in all shapes and sizes, but they're also made from all sorts of different materials. Traditionally, most people had a cloth mousepad because these were the ones you used to get free, but over the years most gamers moved on to mousepads made from hard plastic. Cloth mousepads have not entirely disappeared though, over the last couple of years we've seen quite a few new, high-quality cloth surfaces aimed at gamers who desire a softer or more textured feel.

In this review, I'm taking a look at the ZOWIE G-TF Rough, an XL-sized cloth mousepad that promises to deliver a heavily textured surface. It's the second mousepad in ZOWIE's TF-series, the company also offers the TF Speed - a cloth surface that promises the slick feel of a hard plastic surface.

The G-TF Rough mousepad arrives curled up in a cardboard box.

The G-TF is the largest mousepad in the TF Rough series, it measures 440mm x 320mm and is 2mm thick. For gamers who prefer a more normal size ZOWIE also offers the P-TF Rough - which has a size of 320mm x 250mm. The mousepad has a black surface and features two small red logos. Coming right out of the box, it takes some time before the mousepad flattens out. I put some books on its edges to speed up the process. The G-TF Rough also has a weird chemical/rubber smell but this seems to fade away over time.

Features:
  • As fast as TF speed - rougher texture for different glide
  • Very close to plastic pad texture
  • Triple-stitched edges prevents fray and increases the lifetime of the pad
  • Rolled edges for increased comfort while playing
  • 100% compatible with all types of mice
  • Dimensions: 440 x 320 x 2 mm / 17.3 x 12.6 x 0.08 in
  • ZOWIE placed a SpawN logo in the lower left corner of the mousepad to indicate their partnership with professional gamer Abdisamad 'SpawN' Mohamed. The company says the TF-series went through more than 50 different processes during development, including temperature, pressure and other adjustments, and that SpawN conclusively chose the gaming surface that he felt provided the best feeling.

A small ZOWIE logo is stitched to the upper right corner and you can also see a closeup of the mousepad's surface in the picture below. Unlikely most cloth surfaces, the G-TF Rough has a very textured surface. This mousepad is really for gamers who prefer a rough gaming surface, otherwise you may be better served by the smoother G-TF Speed.

The mousemat has a thickness of 2mm and when you take a look at the edges you can see that it's of much higher quality than most cloth mousepads. The corners are rounded and the edges are not only triple-stitched to prevent fraying but also rolled to increase comfort while playing.

The back side of the G-TF Rough is made from a glossy, rubber-like material to prevent the mousepad from sliding on your desk.
