DarkAdapted is an application program. It controls the amount of red, green, and blue in your screen gamma so that you may, for example, preserve your dark adaptation while using your computer.

DarkAdapted is being used by astronomers, planetarium operators, graphics professionals, medical professionals, airline pilots, air traffic controllers, and others worldwide to provide flexible, dynamic control over their monitor's screen color response. Users may define an unlimited number of gamma presets, and invoke them via global hotkeys, by menu selection, or by typing the first few letters of a preset’s name.

New Features:

  • Control Window: You may now change gamma slider values via the keyboard. Click a gamma value readout (or press the TAB key) to select the value for editing, then type in a new value.
    • To implement the change, press the RETURN, ENTER, or ESCAPE key, move the mouse, click in another area of the window, or — to also select the next readout display — press TAB or SHIFT-TAB.
    • The TAB key cycles through the displays in this order: Red, Green, Blue, None. SHIFT-TAB reverses the editing order.
    • Type a percent sign (“%”) after the value to enter a percentage; all displays change to show gamma percentages, if necessary. Enter a number without a percent sign to specify a raw value (0 to 255); all displays change to show raw gamma values, if necessary.
    • When editing a percentage value, the percent sign (“%”) is not selected, so that the text you enter will automatically replace only the numbers, followed by the percent sign.
    • Press the SPACE key to toggle between entering percentage and raw values.
  • Mac: Install from Disk Image. Mac users may download and open (mount) the DarkAdapted disk image, then simply double-click on the DarkAdapted icon to install to the Applications folder.
  • Mac: Pro Feature: Brightness Slider Floating Window:
    • You may now select the desired monitor for brightness control from a pop-up menu in this window. Press the D key to cycle between all connected displays, or the A key to control all displays.
    • Brightness may now also be specified via text entry on most systems (those that support text entry in floating windows).
    • You may now increment the slider using keyboard control. Hold down one of the modifiers COMMAND, OPTION, or CONTROL, then press the UP or RIGHT ARROW key to increase brightness, or the DOWN or LEFT ARROW key to decrease brightness.
  • Mac: Pro Feature: RGB Sliders Floating Window:
    • You may now select the desired monitor to control, using a pop-up menu. Press the D key to cycle between all connected displays, or the A key to control all displays.
    • Gamma values may now also be specified via text entry on most systems (those that support text entry in floating windows). Press the SPACE key to toggle between entering percentage and raw values.
    • You may now increment the sliders using keyboard control. First, select the text display next to the slider you wish to control. Hold down one of the modifiers COMMAND, OPTION, or CONTROL, then press the UP or RIGHT ARROW key to increase the value, or the DOWN or LEFT ARROW key to decrease the value.

General Changes:

  • Mac: Pro Feature: Brightness Slider Floating Window:
    • The window may now be moved after it is open, without closing when the mouse enters the titlebar.
    • The window will not disappear until the cursor position changes to at least 30 pixels outside of the window. This should make it easier to avoid accidentally closing the window when moving the mouse.
  • Mac: Pro Feature: RGB Sliders Floating Window:
    • The window may now be moved after it is open, without closing when the mouse enters the titlebar.
    • The window will not disappear until the cursor position changes to at least 30 pixels outside of the window. This should make it easier to avoid accidentally closing the window when moving the mouse.
  • Mac: Pro Feature: Custom Icon: Icon Mask (“DAMask”) now should contain white pixels for any region that should be transparent, and black pixels for any region that should be visible. The Icon (“DAIcon”) should contain white pixels in transparent regions.
  • Mac: Pro Feature: Selecting Show Control Windows from the system-wide menu now brings DarkAdapted to the front if the windows were hidden before. Hiding the Control Window(s) via the system-wide menu does not activate DarkAdapted.
  • Updated documentation.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed bug where Save Current Screen as Preset… would be unresponsive if selected from the system-wide menu.
  • Preferences Window: Modified control captions for clarity and fixed duplicate help tags.
