The company says it expects its third quarter sales will likely benefit from new flash-based chip designs. Currently the company supplies Apple with controller chips for HDD-based players, while Sigmatel provides Apple with chips for the flash-based iPod shuffle.
Analysts believe PortalPlayer may have secured a contract with Apple to provide chips for a 2GB iPod mini with flash memory instead of a HDD. New iPods from Apple, including color iPod minis, higher capacity iPod shuffles and a iPod video are expected to arrive in October, according to analysts.
