Dell's Alienware unit announced it made an deal with AMD to secure exclusive Ryzen Threadripper OEM supply until the end of the year. The first Area-51 gaming PCs from Alienware with the Ryzen Threadripper will start shipping on July 27:
"Through 2017, (Alienware) will be the exclusive OEM partner to deliver AMD Ryzen Threadripper pre-built systems to the market and the high-end 16-core will be factory overclocked across all 16-cores and 32 logical threads," Alienware said.
Smaller boutique PC makers like Origin PC, Maingear, iBuypower and Cyberpower will be able to get their hands on Threadripper inventory, but larger players like HP and Lenovo will have to wait until 2018.
The exclusive deal is sure to annoy competitors such as HP and Lenovo, but Alienware said those who roll their own can breathe easy. This exclusive deal won’t block consumers who want to buy the chip and build their own systems.
