AMD's Chris Hook: Vega was delayed to ensure decent launch volume

HardOCP scored an exclusive Vega interview with AMD marketing guy Chris Hook. It is not really a typical interview but more of a monologue in which Hook talks about how Vega marks AMD's "triumphant return" to the high-end GPU market.

Hook states AMD is giving reviewers just enough time to get the content ready and he says that AMD hopes the cards will be available on retail shelves by August 14th.

One question on everyone's mind is why Vega is so late. It appears AMD had significant issues with the hardware and/or software side but Hook doesn't mention any of that and states AMD intentionally delayed the card to ensure it would have good volume at launch. He believes AMD took decent measures (like the packs) to ensure gamers will be able to get their hands on the cards rather than just miners.

He also talked a bit about the power consumption, from a TGP (Total Graphics Power) point of view. Hook reveals the future Radeon RX Vega Nano will have a GPU plus memory power consumption of 150W. This climbs to 165W for the RX Vega 56 and 220W for the Radeon RX Vega 64. Oddly enough, he provided a 300W to 400W range for the liquid cooled Radeon RX Vega 64, which seems pretty wide.
