Sony to sell HD DVDs?

This may come as a surprise but according to an article over at Slashdot, Sony is going to merge its optical storage operations with NEC.

NEC is one of the 4 senior members of the HD DVD alliance so this means that by next year the merged unit could start selling HD DVD drives next to Blu-ray drives!
