Zen 4 to be the return of the APU
There have been rumors for some time now that AMD is working to remove this distinction and now there's more evidence that the future Zen 4-based "Raphael" processors will indeed have integrated graphics.Chips and Cheese covers a bunch of information about AMD's future processors. The source of the information is the recent hack of motherboard and video card maker Gigabyte. Many gigabytes of confidential data were stolen (and subsequently leaked) by a ransomware group.
The site reports most AMD Raphael processors will have integrated graphics:
iGPUs may also make an appearance on more AM5 CPUs. On-chip graphics are mentioned for all three types of AM5 processors. A note at the bottom says “Some OPNs…may not support GFX”, but AMD’s approach with iGPUs seems to be converging with Intel’s – all three types are referred to as APUs elsewhere in the document. Thus AM5 CPUs without iGPUs may just be chips with a defective/disabled iGPU.According to earlier leaks, the integrated graphics will be based on the Navi2. The site also covers the changes to the cache system, memory subsystem, AVX-512, I/O, etc. Chips and Cheese speculates Zen 4 will be similar to the transition from Zen 1 to Zen 2, as the Zen 4 architecture seems to share a lot of similarities to Zen 3. It seems a lot of the improvements may need to come from the switch to TSMC's 5nm node.
