A new page on Intel's website
confirms upcoming 3D XPoint based Optane products will require new hardware because it's exclusively supported by systems that feature both an Intel 200 series chipset and a Kaby Lake series processors.
For Optane to work, you need the latest version of Intel's Smart Response Technology (SRT) and unfortunately this is not available if you have a 100-series motherboard or a Skylake processor.
