One of the problems of devices that require an external server for key functionality is that perfectly fine products may one day stop working. We've seen several cases of this and now there's a new example of a manufacturer that ceases support.
Owners of Sitecom IP cameras are finding out today that the company send out a press release about a service disruption for its WiFi Home Cams (WLC-1000, WLC-2000, WLC-3000, WLC-4000). The supplier that provided the software platform for these IP cameras went bankrupt.
As of yesterday, the WiFi Home Cams and Mycam apps for iOS and Android no longer work. Sitecom says its looking at options to switch to a different software platform. In the meantime, the IP cameras are basically bricked. Some of these IP cameras are still sold in retail stores, so consumers will need to be very careful.
If you bought one of these cameras less than two years ago, Sitecom recommends doing a warranty claim via your retailer. If you've owned the product for more than two years, you can get an undisclosed compensation via the Sitecom Learning Centre.
