HP Omen datasheet hints at GeForce GTX 1180

Could NVIDIA be preparing a new high-end card without RTX? If a datasheet from HP's Omen is to be believed, NVIDIA is working on a GeForce GTX 1180 video card. As always, take this with a grain of salt as this could be nothing more than a typo or a placeholder. It wouldn't be the first time that a product page or specification sheet "leak" got something completely wrong.

Still, it leaves us wondering whether NVIDIA is really planning high-end cards without ray tracing. The latter is the new "killer" feature of the RTX lineup, but despite all the marketing, consumer uptake isn't that strong. A launch of a cheaper, RTX-free flagship would excite a lot of gamers, but it doesn't make sense for NVIDIA as it would essentially be the death of RTX.
This story is further corroborated by the fact that benchmarks of a “GTX 1180” were spotted at GFXbench earlier this year which showed the software recognizing the card as a 2080. This also makes sense because just as the 1160 uses the same board number as the 2060 I would expect the 1180 to be nothing more than a 2080 die with the RTX and tensor disabled via hardware straps and benchmark software could easily confuse it with a 2080.
